Please join us for our next meeting on Tuesday evening between 7-9pm in the basement of St Georges Town Hall, 236 Cable Street, Shadwell, E1 0BL.
We’ll be discussing our next move following the successful demonstration against Poplar Harca’s approach to regenerating Poplar: demolishing and selling off social housing and replacing them with properties for sale on the private market.
While they have already replaced social homes with properties for private sale on a number of estates, they are currently planning to sell off the majority of Balfron Tower on the private market and later this year apply for planning permission to regenerate Chrisp Street Market and the surrounding estates.
It’s no exaggeration to say we’re witnessing the social cleansing of Poplar.
While this may not seem an obvious matter for private renters, without more truly affordable homes being the inflationary pressures on the private rented sector will only increase.
Should we hold another demo, print another news-sheet or organise a public meeting?
Or should we leaflet the estates and hold a few stalls to build interest in and inform residents of the campaign?
Or maybe you have another idea?
We will also update on Tower Hamlets Council’s imminent consultation on a landlord licensing scheme – yes I know it was imminent last month, but at least we’re a month closer. We’ll speak to the officer in charge just before the meeting to find out the latest.
Is there anything we should do to encourage residents to respond in favour of the consultation to counter landlords attempts to block the scheme?
Also, with the elections coming up should we be looking to help organise a hustings that will feature housing as a key issue or is Tower Hamlets too much of a Labour safe seat to bother?
We’ll also have an update on other campaigns going on in Tower Hamlets and neighbouring boroughs.
Thanks for reading and hopefully see you next week
