This coming Wednesday, we’ll be visiting the landlord’s agent to protest against the planned retaliatory eviction of Michael James. Michael is being evicted because he reported the dangerous living conditions in his block to the council.
We’re meeting at 11 am (sharp!) at Stamford Hill station (see map) and walk together to the agent’s office.
We’re filming the protest to produce a little promo video on fighting evictions and organising support amongst neighbours. We have a beautiful banner and placards!
Who is Michael James?
Michael is one of many private renters receiving an eviction notice after demanding repairs to be carried out. He is being evicted because he reported the dangerous living conditions in his block to the council. Health and safety confirm that there are an average of 4 hazards per flat in Michael’s block.
Michael has lived in his flat in Shadwell for 25 years and after seeing tenants being mistreated by agents, Michael stood up for the rights of his neighbours. As he is currently facing homelessness due to retaliatory eviction we are calling for help to stand up for Michael.
Although many of Michael’s neighbours support him, they are afraid to go to the protest – if spotted by the landlord, they also risk eviction. Therefore any act of solidarity this Wednesday to accompany Michael to the landlord’s agent office would be greatly appreciated.
